چکیده

Chiral iridium catalysts have now been used in the asymmetric hydrogenation of largely unfunctionalized olefins for a decade. Recently, they have also been applied to substrates with more exotic functional groups, including non-coordinating ones. These, unlike coordinating substituents, cannot direct asymmetric hydrogenation by rhodiumor ruthenium-based catalysts. This review discusses several classes of these less familiar substrates, outlines the progress that has been made toward their stereoselective hydrogenation, and highlights the role of iridium complexes in this emerging field. We hope this will inspire researchers to consider iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation as a potential route to a broad range of chiral compounds. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Asymmetric Hydrogenation Catalysts

Iridium complexes with chiral N,P ligands have established themselves as efficient catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins, with largely complementary scope to Rh and Ru diphosphane complexes. In contrast to Rh and Ru catalysts, they do not require a coordinating polar group next to the C=C bond. Initial experiments with cationic phosphanyloxazoline (phox) complexes ([Ir(1)(cod)]X...

Carboxy-directed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-alkyl-α-aryl terminal olefins: highly enantioselective and chemoselective access to a chiral benzylmethyl center.

A carboxy-directed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-alkyl-α-aryl terminal olefins was developed by using a chiral spiro iridium catalyst, providing a highly efficient approach to the compounds with a chiral benzylmethyl center. The carboxy-directed hydrogenation prohibited the isomerization of the terminal olefins, and realized the chemoselective hydrogenation of various dienes. The concise enanti...

An additional coordination group leads to extremely efficient chiral iridium catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of ketones.

The production of enantiopure chiral compounds is important for pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries because enantiomers can exhibit distinct biological activities. Therefore, processes that directly produce the desired enantiomer are desirable. First reported by Knowles, Horner et al. in 1968, catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds such as olefins, ketones, and imine...

Chiral iridium(I) bis(NHC) complexes as catalysts for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation

The common use of NHC complexes in transition-metal mediated C–C coupling and metathesis reactions in recent decades has established N-heterocyclic carbenes as a new class of ligand for catalysis. The field of asymmetric catalysis with complexes bearing NHC-containing chiral ligands is dominated by mixed carbene/oxazoline or carbene/phosphane chelating ligands. In contrast, applications of comp...

Neutral iridium catalysts with chiral phosphine-carboxy ligands for asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated carboxylic acids.

We developed neutral iridium catalysts with chiral spiro phosphine-carboxy ligands (SpiroCAP) for asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated carboxylic acids. Different from the cationic Crabtree-type catalysts, the iridium catalysts with chiral spiro phosphine-carboxy ligands are neutral and do not require the use of a tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (BArF-) counterion, which is ne...
